GI Joe: Origins (2009)

G.I. Joe: Origins is a 2009 series published by IDW Publishing. Originally conceived as a five-issue mini-series telling the story of G.I. Joe‘s first mission as a team, it subsequently became an ongoing series with rotating creative teams, featuring a mixture of both standalone character spotlight stories and tie-ins to the main ongoing series.

Many of the book’s standalone stories were originally intended for release as one-shot comics, much like IDW’s The Transformers: Spotlight, before being folded into Origins.

GI Joe (1990’s)

When G.I. Joe began, most toy tie-in comics lasted an average of two years, so G.I. Joe, lasting for 12 years, was considered a runaway success. Through the years, the comic book series chronicled the adventures of G.I. Joe and Cobra, using a consistent storyline. In the early 1990s, however, it began to drop in quality, and was canceled by Marvel in 1994 with issue #155 due to low sales. Hasbro canceled the A Real American Hero toy line in the same year. Between the lack of new toys and the cancellation of the second TV series three years earlier, the comic book could not count on the same cross-platform support it had enjoyed in the past. The target demographic had also changed considerably.

GI Joe – IDW (2008)

After Devil’s Due lost the G.I. Joe comics license in January 2008, the license was given to IDW Publishing, which was officially announced on May 29, 2008. IDW’s G.I. Joe series is a complete reboot of the property, ignoring the continuity from the Marvel and Devil’s Due incarnations of the comic.

GI Joe – Snake Eyes (2009)

September of 2009, a 4 issue mini-series, G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes, written by Ray Park (the actor who played Snake Eyes in the movie) & Kevin Van Hook gives the movie universe’s version of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow’s history.

GI Joe Master & Apprentice (2004)

G.I. Joe: Master and Apprentice was a mini-series published in 2004 by Devil’s Due. The story chronicles how the destinies of Snake-Eyes and Kamakura become entwined, providing part of the untold story of how things came to be in the main series.
